Summary of stated purpose

The aim of the Information Systems Management and Governance Toolkit is to help senior managers ensure that IT investments are aligned to strategy. It is designed to encourage institutions to reflect on the management and governance of their information systems by thinking in a structured way about what they want to achieve from strategic investments and whether current structures and practices are aligned to objectives. It encourages institutions to develop an action plan to address areas of perceived weakness, with the toolkit providing references to an extensive range of existing best practice guidelines and other resources for institutions to consider.

Output types

Qualitative

The framework covers governance, management, resources, structures and services. The toolkit describes four steps in relation to the management and governance of information systems and IT. Institutions rate themselves on the 1-5 scale, with '1' = poor to '5' = positive in all the significant systems and services defined in the scope.

Supporting evidence

JISC commissioned a project in 2005 at the University of Strathclyde, which developed a self-assessment process and supporting toolkit for institutions. The toolkit was piloted by a number of HEIs during 2006/07.The following institutions took part in the pilot phase of the project: The University of Brighton, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, The University of Cambridge, Durham University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Liverpool John Moores University and The University of Northampton. Anonymised case study data is available.
