Summary of stated purpose
The Maturity Model aims to give an accurate, reliable and honest summary of the current level of maturity of the records management measures within an institution.
It helps in:
- Identifying and providing evidence of good practice in records management
- Providing evidence of compliance with the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act and its Code of Practice
- Identifying areas for improvement
- Measuring institutional priority of records management as an operational or strategic priority
The Model provides statements summarising 4 levels of 'maturity' against 33 aspects of what constitutes a records management programme appropriate for ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act taken from the Revised Code of Practice.

Supporting evidence
The model is broadly based upon the Knowledge & Information Management maturity model developed for use in central government by the Knowledge Council and which aligns with the Information Architecture (IA) maturity model produced by Communications-Electronics Security Group(CESG) http://www.cesg.gov.uk/products_services/iacs/iamm/index.shtml.
